Life Skills: Be Easy
By Carlos “Los-1” Ramirez II
I remember growing up as a sexually active high school student and not having a clue about STDs or how they could dangerously affect my life. All I knew about them were that the AIDS virus was a big deal to many people, but I didn’t think that I, a cool young man in St. Petersburg, FL., would get such a thing. Who has time to think about diseases? I didn’t know anyone who had them anyway.
I don’t want it to be like that for the rest of teens out there. Concerning STDs, much more of awareness should be brought to teens in a way they can relate to and understand how badly STDs affect the body. Personally, I feel that if done correctly, a song spun over and over again in the MP3 players of America will do the job. Take a look at what “Run Away Love” by Ludacris and Mary J. Blige, has done to inform Americans of the seriousness of raising children with love and respect instead of abuse and disregard.
GOAL: To present facts about Syphilis, HPV and Trichomoniasis, while giving practical situations on how one can contract them.
APPLICATION: Present the song one verse at a time then stop. Ask our provided questions to the students and wait for answers.
- Question for verse 1: Which STD was described in the verse? Where did Little Johnny go wrong? Where did his date go wrong?
- Question for verse 2: Did you know that HPV can cause cervical cancer? Do you think Eugene felt that Liza owed him something? How could Liza have shown Eugene affection without having sex with her?
- Question for verse 3: How many of you have ever heard of Trichomoniasis? More people get this STD than any other; do you know someone with it? Do you think your friends or acquaintances would tell you if they had it?
Question: What was your favorite part about this song?
